Karen Hodges, licensed as a manicurist and esthetician in both Florida and Texas, has over 20 years behind the table as a working technician. Karen has operated successfully in several locations both in Florida and Texas.
“My first career was in business and finance as a corporate controller and financial analyst for various organizations in several industries. This background has given me a wide perspective on what it takes to run a salon, or a chain of salons, successfully.”
Utilizing her background in business and finance enabled Karen to keep a handle on her business – understanding how the numbers work for her revenues and costs has given her an edge in her markets – especially in knowing how to place herself for profit in the highly competitive nail salon niche.
“Early in my new career as a nail tech, I met a group of dedicated, passionate women on the email list at beautytech.com. We monitored an email list where anyone could ask a question and the best and brightest in the industry would answer. We all saw all the questions and all the answers…and we all learned.”
Her participation at beautytech.com lead to meeting publishers in the beauty industry and Karen has been writing articles for various trade publications since 2000. She also attends several trade shows each year to teach classes.
“Sharing what I’ve learned is one of the best things I do. I love when I see that light hit a student’s eyes when I’m teaching a class.”
Taking her love of teaching to a higher level, Karen has partnered with beauty-industry icon, Janet McCormick, to create highly creative and successful learning platforms for manicurists at Nailcare Academy and for all salon professionals at Salon Gurus
